Buying a house in Algorfa means buying in the Vega Baja, the flat farming area along the river Segura. The village lies low on the south bank of the river, surrounded by Almoradí, Rojales, Benijófar and Los Montesinos. The supermarket, the pharmacy, the primary school and the GP surgery are a few minutes’ walk from each other. South of the village the ground rises towards the golf course and the residential areas around it. Buying here means choosing between a flat village with everything on foot and a higher golf area where you take the car for almost everything.
In the village you live on flat, low ground, with amenities on foot. South of the village lies Montemar, a residential area around an eighteenth-century manor that is still privately lived in. Further south, a few kilometres from the village and higher up the slope, lies the golf resort of La Finca. The urbanisations of neighbouring municipalities such as Rojales and Benijófar run up against the boundary. With a home in that border area, check carefully which municipality is on the paperwork, because it determines tax, registration and healthcare.
Around La Finca most of what is for sale is villas, plus flats and linked houses, and that is also where most new-build projects are. In Montemar you find a mix of villas, flats and detached houses. With a home in a complex, ask about the annual contribution to the owners’ community and for the minutes of the last meetings, so you know which costs are coming. Have an adviser check that the pool and any extensions are also on the register. What is being built now is on the new-build page for Algorfa.
Algorfa suits people looking for golf and quiet who want to live all year in an ordinary village. It suits those who want the beach nearby less well: there is no beach within ten kilometres, and from La Finca you drive for the shopping too. In summer it is warmer here than on the coast. Mind the water as well: in the heavy rain of a few years ago, the Segura embankment broke in neighbouring Almoradí, and the whole Vega Baja was flooded. The village lies low, the golf area higher; have the flood risk checked per address.
For public healthcare Algorfa falls under the Vega Baja hospital near Orihuela, unlike neighbouring Rojales and Benijófar, which fall under Torrevieja. The village has a GP surgery, and a new, larger health centre is in preparation. There is a British international school in San Miguel de Salinas, and a Norwegian school in Rojales. Alicante airport is about three quarters of an hour away by car. For the beach you drive to Guardamar del Segura.

Yes, the golf course and the hotel next to it are in the municipality of Algorfa, a few kilometres south of the village. The urbanisations of Rojales and Benijófar are close to the boundary, though, so check which municipality is on the paperwork for every home.
The public hospital of the Vega Baja, near Orihuela. People from a neighbouring municipality often expect Torrevieja, but Algorfa falls under a different department. The village has a GP surgery.
In the heavy rain of a few years ago the whole Vega Baja was hit, with an embankment breaking in neighbouring Almoradí. Whether a home is at risk depends on its position: the village lies low, the golf area higher. Have it checked per address.
Not in the village: supermarket, pharmacy, school and GP surgery are close together. From La Finca and Montemar you do, because the village is a few kilometres away and the coast further still.
