Buying a house in Alfaz del Pi means buying in a municipality with two faces: the village of l’Alfàs inland, gently rolling and with everyday shops close by, and l’Albir on the sea, against the Serra Gelada nature park. In between lie urbanisations on the hills. The municipality has had a large Norwegian community since the sixties, with its own schools, a church and clubs, and so it is not empty here in winter either. To outsiders everything here is often "Albir", but the village and the coast are clearly different.
In l’Albir you live close to the promenade and the beach, with the walk to the lighthouse round the corner. In the village you live in a more Spanish, quieter setting, with market and square, but not by the sea. Between and behind them lie urbanisations such as El Romeral, l’Arabí, Barranc Fondo and the Colònia Escandinava, with villas and bungalows. Mind the boundaries: in the hills urbanisations run on into La Nucía, and on the coastal side part of what is called "Albir" already lies in Benidorm. So check the deeds for which municipality it is.
In l’Albir you mainly buy flats close to the promenade, and villas against the slope of the Serra Gelada too. In the urbanisations it is detached villas, linked bungalows and flats, many from the seventies to the nineties. With such an older home on a sloping plot, have the retaining walls, drainage and damp checked, and whether extensions are registered. With a house against the nature park, restrictions on alterations may apply; ask an adviser. What is being built now is on the new-build page for Alfaz del Pi.
Alfaz del Pi suits people who want to live all year in an international setting, with multilingual doctors nearby and the amenities of Benidorm a short drive away. It also suits walkers, with the Serra Gelada on the doorstep. It suits those who want a sandy beach less well: the beach at l’Albir is made of light pebbles. If you are after a Spanish village, the village itself is a better choice than l’Albir, which is strongly geared to Norwegian and other Northern European residents. And in early July the film festival draws many visitors to the promenade.
The tram from Benidorm to Dénia stops near the village and in l’Albir; for Alicante you change in Benidorm. Alicante airport is about three quarters of an hour away by car on the AP-7. The public hospital of the Marina Baixa is in Villajoyosa, private hospitals are in Benidorm, and for GP care there is a health centre in the municipality. The municipality has a British and a Norwegian school. You play golf on the edge of Benidorm. To the north lies Altea; read more about the coast on the page about the Costa Blanca North.
