Buying a house in Torrevieja means buying in a town that runs all year, not in a resort that shuts in October. The centre is flat, with straight streets on a grid: after a severe earthquake in the early nineteenth century, the town was rebuilt to a new plan. To the north and inland lie the two lagoons of the natural park, where salt is still harvested. A large share of residents come from outside Spain. The beach the facts block lists near the centre is the small harbour beach; the wide sandy beaches are a little further on.
In the centre and around the harbour you live in a flat, with the promenade, the market and the town beaches of Los Locos and El Cura within walking distance. La Mata, on the north side, has the long beach of the municipality and borders the lagoon of the same name. Inland are the urbanisations, such as Aguas Nuevas and Los Balcones: higher and gently rolling, a few kilometres from the sea, with more detached homes. In the south, the headland at Punta Prima marks the boundary with Orihuela. A home advertised as Torrevieja may already be in the neighbouring municipality there.
In and around the centre, most of what is for sale is flats, from older blocks to penthouses on the promenade. In the urbanisations you are more likely to buy a bungalow, a terraced house or a villa, often on a development with a shared pool. Much of it went up in a short time, around the turn of the century. So ask for the minutes of the last meetings and the accounts of the community of owners: unpaid contributions and postponed repairs do occur here. Current projects are on the new-build page for Torrevieja.
Torrevieja suits people who want to live here all year with shops, healthcare and transport close by, on flat ground that stays easy to get around as you get older. It suits those looking for space and quiet less well: the town is densely built and the town beaches are packed in high season. The N-332 ring road clogs up in summer, especially between the CV-905 and CV-95 junctions, and there are plans to widen that stretch, which could mean years of roadworks. If you want a Spanish village, look inland instead, for example in Rojales.
You have a choice of two airports here: Alicante is about three quarters of an hour by car, Murcia-Corvera three quarters of an hour to an hour. A bus also runs to Alicante. The public hospital for the area is in the municipality itself, on the CV-95 on the inland side, and on the north side, near Aguas Nuevas, there is a private hospital. Golf courses are nearby, including around Villamartín and Ciudad Quesada. You can read more about the whole stretch of coast and the neighbouring towns on the page about the Costa Blanca South.

Both: the headland at Punta Prima is the boundary between the two municipalities, and the beach falls under Orihuela. Adverts often list homes there under Torrevieja. For a specific property, have it checked which municipality it is in, because that is the town hall you will turn to from then on.
The public hospital of Torrevieja is in the municipality itself, on the CV-95. It serves a large part of the Vega Baja, including Rojales and Guardamar. There is also a private hospital near Aguas Nuevas.
No. Torrevieja has a large permanent population, much of it from outside Spain, and most shops and services stay open all year. In summer, second-home owners and tourists come on top of that.
Alicante is the main airport for this coast and is about three quarters of an hour by car. Murcia-Corvera is three quarters of an hour to an hour away and is an alternative if your flight works out better from there.
