Buying a house in Pilar de la Horadada: village, coast or pine woods on the border with Murcia
Pilar de la Horadada is the southernmost municipality of the Costa Blanca
Buying a house in Pilar de la Horadada means buying in the southernmost municipality of the province of Alicante, right against the region of Murcia. The municipality has several centres: the village lies a few kilometres inland on flat ground, Torre de la Horadada and Mil Palmeras are on the sea, and the villa area of Pinar de Campoverde is inland. Pilar only became a municipality of its own in the nineteen eighties; before that it belonged to Orihuela. The village lives all year and has everyday amenities itself. So buying here means choosing a centre first and a home second.
Torre, Mil Palmeras or Campoverde: where to look in Pilar de la Horadada
Torre de la Horadada is the coastal centre with the marina, the old watchtower and the beach by the harbour. North of it, beyond the dry bed of the Río Seco, lies Mil Palmeras with a wide sandy beach. Pinar de Campoverde is inland among the pines, with villas on their own plots and a small centre with shops. Around the golf course on the road to Orihuela there are homes too. El Mojón, on the border, is a special case: the regional boundary runs through its streets, and part of it lies in San Pedro del Pinatar.
Bungalow near the sea or villa among the pines: what Pilar de la Horadada has for sale
On the coast, in Torre de la Horadada and Mil Palmeras, it is mostly flats, linked bungalows and villas within walking distance of the sea, and there are new-build projects. In Pinar de Campoverde there are detached villas on their own plots, the oldest from the nineteen eighties; with that generation, look at the pipes, the insulation and the roof. For a home close to the Río Seco or another dry riverbed, have the flood risk checked, because such beds carry a lot of water in heavy rain. The projects under construction are on the new-build page for Pilar de la Horadada.
Pilar de la Horadada suits those seeking quiet, less so those who want a hospital nearby
Pilar suits people looking for quiet on a coast with low-rise building, and those who want to use the village all year. One point buyers often miss is healthcare. The public hospital for Pilar is in Torrevieja, a good twenty kilometres to the north. The Murcian hospital just across the border is closer, but falls under a different health system, and an earlier request from the council to have residents treated there was not granted. The village does have a health centre with an emergency post open day and night. Between the centres you need a car.
Airport, golf and marina: practical matters from Pilar de la Horadada
The nearest airport is the Región de Murcia airport at Corvera, a good half hour by car; Alicante is further away but has more connections. The N-332 runs along the coast through the municipality, the AP-7 a little inland. Torre de la Horadada has a marina with a sailing school, and the inland part of the municipality has an eighteen-hole golf course. You will find a British international school in nearby San Miguel de Salinas. Pilar marks the southern edge of the Costa Blanca South; across the border the Costa Cálida begins.
