What to know about living in Cartagena
Where it is and how you get there
Cartagena sits on a natural bay on the Mediterranean, in the south-east of the Murcia region. Hills ring the city, several still crowned by old forts, and look out over a harbour that has served as a port since antiquity. The Mar Menor lies to the north, the coast towards Mazarrón to the west. Murcia airport at Corvera is around half an hour away, Alicante a little over an hour.
What kind of place it is, and who it suits
This is a working city, not a resort. Cartagena has its own economy, a naval base and a university, and most residents live here year-round. The centre holds a Roman theatre, a modernist shopping street and a long quayside, with ordinary residential districts around it. Buyers here usually choose Spanish city life with the sea beside it rather than a holiday complex. Little changes outside high season, because the season does not set the rhythm here.
What you will find there
As a regional centre Cartagena has the full range: a large hospital, secondary schools, a university, shopping centres and a railway station. There is a cruise terminal and a marina in the city itself. The municipal beaches lie outside the centre, along the coast towards La Manga and towards Mazarrón, a fifteen to thirty minute drive. For international schools, buyers generally look to the Mar Menor area.
