Buying a house in Finestrat rarely means buying in the village itself. It sits inland on a rock at the foot of the Puig Campana, with houses hanging over the edge, and the facts block on this page measures from there: high up, on a slope and far from the sea. Most of what is for sale is lower down, in the urbanisations between the village and Benidorm and in the small coastal enclave of Cala de Finestrat. Those areas belong to Finestrat but live to the rhythm of the big town next door. So buyers here first choose between a Spanish mountain village and a residential area on the edge of a resort.
Urbanisations such as Sierra Cortina sit on gently rolling ground above the town and are often listed under Benidorm in adverts, while they belong to Finestrat. By road, the centre of Benidorm is much closer from there than the village itself. The same goes for the large shopping area on the edge of Benidorm: it is on Finestrat land. On the coast, Cala de Finestrat borders La Cala de Benidorm directly; two municipalities on one promenade. Around Balcó de Finestrat there are more residential areas, with their own primary school.
On the slopes above Benidorm it is mainly villas, often new or still being built, plus flats on developments with a pool. In Cala de Finestrat you buy a flat on or close to the beach. The village has village houses in narrow, steep streets. The council encourages further building between the village and the coast, so today’s open view could be a neighbour’s house in a few years: have an adviser find out what may be built on the plots around your home. Current projects are on the new-build page for Finestrat.
Finestrat works for people who want Benidorm’s amenities close by without living in the bustle themselves, and for those looking for a new home with a pool and a view of the sea or the mountain. It works less well if you want to do everything on foot: from the urbanisations you take the car to the baker, the school and the doctor. The village itself is small and steep. A lot of building is still going on, and you hear and see it. With a home low down in the La Cala valley, look at the watercourse: it has been channelled to prevent flooding, but have the location checked anyway.
Alicante airport is about three quarters of an hour by car, and the AP-7 has a junction between Benidorm and Finestrat. The coastal tram stops in Benidorm, where the lines to Alicante and Dénia connect. The public hospital of the Marina Baixa is in Villajoyosa, and Benidorm has two private hospitals. International schools are in Benidorm and La Nucía. Golfers have a nine-hole course with the Puig Campana as a backdrop, a pitch-and-putt in Sierra Cortina and two eighteen-hole courses on the edge of Benidorm.

To Finestrat, even though many adverts list it under Benidorm. By road, the centre of Benidorm is indeed closer than the village of Finestrat. For permits and registration you go to Finestrat town hall.
No, they are two neighbours on the same coast. La Cala de Benidorm has belonged to Benidorm for centuries, while Cala de Finestrat is Finestrat’s small stretch of coast next to it. So with a flat, check carefully which municipality it is in.
Yes, new residential areas keep appearing between the village and the coast, and the council encourages that development. With a home that has an open view, ask what may be built on the plots around it. Have an adviser look into it before you make an offer.
