Living in Villajoyosa
Where it is and how you get there
Villajoyosa lies on the northern Costa Blanca, between Benidorm and El Campello, and has long been the main town of the Marina Baixa. The old centre sits directly on the sea, with the coloured houses along the seafront and the dry riverbed as its best-known image. There is a tram stop on the line between Alicante and Benidorm; Alicante airport is about half an hour away.
What kind of place it is, and who it suits
Villajoyosa has remained a fishing town and feels different from the resorts beside it: a working harbour, a centre with history and a seafront not dominated by high-rise. The coloured façades are not decoration: in the nineteenth century fishermen painted their houses brightly so they could tell them apart from the sea. The town is also known for its chocolate industry, which has been here since 1881. The crowd is a mix of Spanish and international.
What you will find there
The public hospital for the whole Marina Baixa is here and serves some two hundred thousand people. There is a marina, a fishing harbour with an auction and a chocolate museum open since 1998. Supermarkets, schools and a market are all in town. The tram makes Alicante and Benidorm reachable without a car. The beach by the centre is sandy and runs on to the smaller bays south of town.
