Buying guide

Buying a house in Fuengirola: in a built-up coastal town you mainly choose a building

Fuengirola is a small, densely built municipality at the mouth of the river

Buying a house in Fuengirola means buying in a small municipality that is almost entirely built up. The centre lies flat by the sea, at the mouth of the Río Fuengirola, and the town runs up against the hills on its eastern and northern sides. Because there is hardly any empty land left, what you buy here is usually a home in an existing building, or new build on the edge. So buying here means choosing a building rather than a plot, and that building deserves most of your attention.

By the station, on the hill or inland: where to look in Fuengirola

The coastal districts, from the centre via Los Boliches to Carvajal, are flat and each has a station on the coastal train line. Torreblanca lies against the hill, with the station below and the climb home. Los Pacos is the residential area inland, without a station but with a new health centre. Mind the boundaries: Las Lagunas feels like Fuengirola but belongs to Mijas, Carvajal runs on into Benalmádena, and the El Higuerón residential area on the hill lies largely in Benalmádena, even when an advert says Fuengirola.

Flat in an existing block or new build on the edge: what Fuengirola has for sale

Along the coast it is mostly flats in large blocks from the first wave of tourist building. With such a building, the lift, the facade, the pipes and the reserves of the owners’ community determine what you will pay in the coming years; ask for the budget and the minutes of the last meetings. On the hills and on the edge there are townhouses, villas and newer complexes. New build comes mainly on the edges, because little land is free within the town. What is being built now is on the new-build page for Fuengirola.

Fuengirola suits those who want town life and the train, less so those seeking space and quiet

Fuengirola suits people who want to live all year in a town by the sea, with the train to the airport and Málaga close by, and Scandinavian families: there is a Finnish and a Swedish school, each with its own national curriculum. It suits those looking for a garden, space or quiet less well. In the low-lying parts, mind the water: in severe storms the area around the Río Fuengirola is among the most vulnerable in the province, and streets and a business park have flooded before. Have the flood risk checked per address.

Train, hospital and harbour: practical matters from Fuengirola

A home within walking distance of one of the four stations often saves you a car here: the coastal train runs to the airport and Málaga, and Fuengirola is the end of the line. For the large public hospital you go to Marbella, and Benalmádena has a smaller public hospital. The town has its own marina and fishing port. British and other international schools are mostly in the neighbouring municipalities. Read more about the districts and daily life on Living in Fuengirola.
