What to know about living in Orihuela
Where it is and how you get there
Orihuela is a municipality with two faces that lie far apart. The historic city is inland in the Vega Baja, on the Segura, with a cathedral and a former bishop’s palace. Orihuela Costa is over twenty kilometres away at the sea and consists of urbanisations such as Playa Flamenca, Cabo Roig, La Zenia and Villamartín. Almost all new build is on that coast. Alicante airport is around forty-five minutes away.
What kind of place it is, and who it suits
Anyone reading "Orihuela" in a listing is in practice nearly always buying on the coast. That part is strongly international: British, Scandinavian, Belgian and Dutch residents live there all year, and many services are set up for them. The old city, by contrast, is Spanish, with students, a historic centre and barely any tourism. It is worth checking which of the two a development gives you, because the drive between them is half an hour.
What you will find there
The coast has several golf courses, among them Villamartín and Las Ramblas, and, at La Zenia, one of the largest shopping centres in the area. There are international schools and many medical practices working in several languages, Dutch included. The beaches are small and rocky to the south and sandy at Playa Flamenca. The town hall and the courts are in the old city. The area’s public hospital, the Hospital Vega Baja, is not there but in San Bartolomé, on the road to Almoradí and within the same municipality.
