What to know about living in Los Alcázares
Where it is and how you get there
Los Alcázares sits on the western shore of the Mar Menor, the saltwater lagoon in Murcia separated from the Mediterranean by the La Manga spit. The land is flat: from the beach the built-up area runs kilometres inland without any real slope. Murcia airport at Corvera is about half an hour away, Alicante a little over an hour. The AP-7 connects the town to Cartagena; for the city of Murcia you take the RM-19 and the A-30.
What kind of place it is, and who it suits
The Mar Menor is shallow and warm, and that sets the tone for the whole place. You swim without waves, sail and windsurf, and the water is usable for much of the year. Los Alcázares is not a high-rise resort but a long, low coastal town with a broad promenade. The crowd is a mix of Spanish and international, with a clear summer peak. Out of season part of the hospitality stays open, but it is noticeably quiet.
What you will find there
There are several beaches linked by a promenade, a marina and water sports on the lagoon. Nearby are a number of the golf resorts of the Murcia coast. Supermarkets, a health centre and schools are in the town itself; for a hospital and larger shops you drive to Cartagena or San Javier. When choosing a development, look at where it sits relative to the lagoon: this is low-lying land that has seen flooding after heavy rain.
